Oh What a Lovely War Performance
    18th March 2014

The History department took out the entire Year 8 group over two days to Stratford Theatre Royal in the past two weeks to watch ‘Oh What a Lovely War’. Pupils got to see the play which made use of songs that ordinary British soldiers sang during the war that killed ten million in four years. The pupils enjoyed the experience, as part of Newham’s Every Child a Theatre Goer initiative. The History department hopes the play will help Year 8 pupils with their understanding of the First World War, which they are learning about at present in lessons. Some comments from pupils : “The play was interesting and funny” “I enjoyed the play because it was interesting” “It was good and I had fun. It was very educational” “I enjoyed the way they made fun off each other. It was hilarious” Mr Hussain Read More

  • A Friendly Fixture...

    A Friendly Fixture...
    18th March 2014

On Monday night, Cumberland hosted two Tennis teams from the Coopers Company & Coborn School in Upminster for a friendly fixture. In Tennis terms, Coopers are now recognised as the best State School in the country, and last week competed in the National Schools Tennis finals at Bolton Arena, finishing 5th overall, so this was an excellent test for our Year 8 & 9 teams and I’m proud to say that, whilst the result was a comprehensive victory for Coopers (they won 12-0 in both the year 8 & the year 9 matches), the Cumberland boys kept battling to the end, and the games themselves were tight, with a lot of deuces and break point opportunities for both sides. Particular credit must go to Ilaman Annagurbanov, who showed excellent fighting spirit and determination in both his matches. Facing three match points in his final service game, he still battled back to deuce, but lost 6-4 on his fourth match point. Pics attached, full results below. Rgds, Gary.
