    Road to Wimbledon 2014
    23rd May 2014

It started in sunshine, and ended with us dodging thunderstorms and threatening skies, but finally after 41 matches across two weeks and two events we’ve reached the end of this year’s Road to Wimbledon tournament. Our winners are… U14 Girls In a closely contested round robin of five players, Teresa Da Silva took first place with 4 wins from 4. Sydney Merritt took second place, with 3 wins, with Vilija Burbuleviciute taking third place with 2 wins. U14 Boys Abdi Hassan reclaimed his title with a hard fought win in straight sets over Joy Hoque. Abdi won the first set comfortably, 6-2, then had to hold off a determined fight back from Joy to finally prevail 7-6 (7-4 in the tie break). Kieren Primus and Isswell Owusu were deserving Semi-Finalists. Congratulations to Teresa, Sydney, Abdi and Joy who have qualified for the County Finals which will be held at Redbridge in June Read More

  • The Road to Wimbledon ends here...
    20th May 2014

Over the past two weeks, 30 boys and 6 girls from years 7 to 9 have been battling it out the for the right to qualify for the County Finals stage of this year’s HSBC Road to Wimbledon Tennis tournament. This is the biggest 14 & Under event in Britain, with kids from clubs, parks and schools from all over the country competing for the right to play at Wimbledon in August. Now, with 46 matches down and 3 to go, the boys and girls events are reaching their climax. In the Boys event number 1 seed & defending champ Abdi Hassan has reached Thursday night’s final, where he faces Joy Hoque from year 7. Joy has taken out three seeds on his route to the final. Can the champ come through, or will the new kid on the block knock him off his throne? In the Girls Round Robin event, things are getting complex! Sydney Merritt and Teresa Da Silva are joint top with four wins each. However, Teresa’s last match against Vilija Burbuleviciute is evenly poised at 5 games all. If Vilija beats Teresa, and then wins her last match, Vilija, Teresa & Sydney will all have won four matches, which means qualification will be determined by percentage of games won. If Teresa beats Vilija, Teresa wins out right, with Sydney finishing as runner up. It’s been a fantastic event, with some amazing Tennis being played and I’m really proud of all the players. If you can make it down tomorrow, either at Lunch to watch the end of Vilija vs Teresa, or after school to watch the boys final, please come along and show your support!
