Pastoral Care

Pastoral care at Cumberland School is central to pupils' development.  We believe that providing a framework of care and support for our pupils will assist them in their academic and social development throughout their school life.

“The school provides a very high level of care, advice and guidance for groups of students and individuals”
“The school has maintained the high – quality of pastoral care noted in the previous inspection”

School is a complicated place and Cumberland School’s pastoral system is there to allow a smooth pathway through secondary school and the phases of growing up. It is there to ensure all our pupils have every opportunity to be successful and ready to make the most of the challenges of adult life.

This is done by placing every pupil in a form with a form tutor who moves with them through years 7 to 11. This gives them a base and a key member of staff who knows them.

This is parents’ first point of contact, as the form tutor has an overview of their education and can guide and support them through the many decisions faced during secondary education.

The Year Coordinator has oversight of the whole year group, supporting, guiding and monitoring their academic, personal and social progress. They, too, move through the school with their year group.

Form tutors and Year Coordinators build up a relationship with each child and their families, with their experience and knowledge of the education process we are able to offer a system that will enable pupils to make the very best of their time and opportunities at Cumberland School.

There is also a Director of Pupil Services and Support who takes a strategic view of pupils’ social and academic progress.

All year groups have an Assistant Headteacher who works directly with the Year Coordinator.

All year groups are supported by a Learning Mentor. This offers pupils additional support.
