Aims Of The Department
The aim of the department is to use the Specialist Sports Status as a means to raise self esteem, attainment and achievement.
Our department supports the school vision “to equip every Cumberland pupil with the knowledge and the skills to develop as individuals, to contribute as citizens and to build happy and fulfilling lives”.
In PE we aim to enable every child to leave school with an accredited PE qualification. We strive to reduce the attainment gap between groups of pupils by making effective use of data to inform teaching and learning and by constantly develop our skills as a teaching team. We aim to support pupils to understand the key skills and process they need to develop and progress. We are constantly developing a curriculum that involves a range of tasks and activities to support and challenge learners of all abilities. We are currently focussing on developing tasks that encourage pupils to be independent learners.
In 2011, 26% of pupils achieved A*-C grades in their PE GCSE and 74% in their BTEC First Certificate. Our objective is to continue to raise achievements and ensure all students leave Cumberland school with an accredited PE qualification at the end of year 11.
Many of pupils start to undertake a sports leadership unit and coaching awards from Year 9 onwards and then proceed to support younger pupils in the school and our primary schools and other networks at competitions, sports day and other events. This has a massive impact on behaviour, self-esteem and confidence for our young people.

Assessment is central to our pupils’ learning and progress. The focus of written and oral feedback is to inform pupils and provide them with a clear understanding of how well they have gained knowledge, concepts and skills and then explain what needs to be done to further meet the learning objectives. The use of peer and self assessment helps pupils to identify their own and other’s strength and weaknesses.
Coursework is marked regularly, with detailed comments given to pupils every 3/4 weeks. Teachers give pupils a chance to act on the changes that they have suggested so that they can see how to improve their work. Furthermore, at the end of each unit of work, pupils will be given an opportunity to improve on their work to gain a higher grade.
We take every opportunity to discuss pupils’ strengths and areas for develop, both formally and informally, as we believe that this is central to helping them to progress in their learning.
The PE department sets homework fortnightly, and these tasks should be directly related to the pupil learning in class, and are marked by class teachers.
We also use many opportunities outside of lesson time in extra-curricular clubs to ensure that pupils are actively engaged and that they both understand the learning and can apply this to their own work.
