    Welcome Back

As the end of our first full week comes to an end can I take this opportunity to wish you all a very positive 2012. The Olympics is a very big focus for the school, Newham and London but I am sure it will be a year of further improvement in all aspects of school life. Year 11 are now very focused on next summers exams. Thursday evening was the first Parent Consultation of the year when many year 11 set ambitious targets for themselves. I wish them all well with their studies for the remaining few months.

Earlier this week Cumberland pupils had the opportunity to meet Tyson Gay and some of his fellow US athletes. The athletes were here to view the stadium in preparation for the London 2012 Games. Tyson will be aiming to beat Usain Bolt for a second time to become the world’s fastest man. His primary events are the 100m and 200m. His personal bests establish him as the second fastest athlete in the 100m and the fifth fastest athlete in the history of the 200m, with times of 9.69 (which is a United States record) and 19.58 seconds respectively.

The pupils were selected as part of a Newham team of up and coming athletes. They were invited to a private signing at the viewing area in John Lewis, Westfield, Stratford City.
