This week's highlights
There are many highlights to all my weeks as Headteacher of Cumberland School. This week was particularly special. Our abandoned Sports Day was an excellent event. I was very impressed with the pupils who so warmly applauded the athletes from the ASD Provision, as they made their way around the track in their 'marathon' event. Despite the weather we had a great morning and the pupils coped very well with the very poor conditions.
Winning medals makes the effort worthwhile. Congratulations to all who took part.

I was also pleased to welcome the year 6 pupils, who will be joining Cumberland School in September, during their 'Transition Day', on Friday 24th June. A big thank you to our Transition Leaders from Year 7 & 8 who helped out during the day.

More opportunities for Cumberland pupils
“Sports Anywhere” has been set up in partnership with Calypso Soft Drinks to give young people the opportunity to get involved in alternative sports. This is our second year to work with the team, last year we tried surfing, this year mountain biking. The team launched “MTB Anywhere” , taking off-road Mountain Biking skills to schools and cities across the UK. It’s all about building confidence, trying something new and enjoying the ride. Neil Donoghue is one of the team members that visited Cumberland School. Neil has in the past few years established himself as one of the best all round mountain bike riders. Having been a pro for 8 years travelling the world racing bikes and doing photo and video shoots, Neil has competed at the very highest level and also featured in many Mountain Bike films such as the Earthed series, Between The Tapes and First. Approximately 250 pupils were involved in the day and are now very keen to develop their skills further.

I was once again very pleased to receive a very positive letter, of thanks, from a school where our pupils have been helping.
“I would like to congratulate your team of young leaders who gave up their time to officiate at the East London Tennis Tournament today. I thought that they were extremely patient with the children taking part and also very encouraging. They are a credit to you and Cumberland School.”Bancroft's SchoolPosted at 15:10

The pupils were put into mixed-school teams of four pupils where they undertook three practical, applied science challenges. The challenges ranged from assembling a mobile Lego mind storm robot containing DC motors, lights etc to designing and assembling a small vehicle powered by 6V batteries, solar power and fuel cell.
Cumberland pupils did very well in the challenges. Lily England and Harrison Iloh were part of the team that came 1st for the robot challenge and won overall first prize for Newham and will be representing the Borough in the Challenge final, which will be held towards the end of next term.
Ms Mc Fadden was extremely proud of all the pupils.

Another highlight of the week was the further development of the school's Sensory Garden. Work this week was led by Mr Naylor and Mr Hughes supported by Year 8 & 10 pupils.
