Cumberland School’s curriculum aims to offer a broad and balanced education, tailored to the needs of our pupils. It provides a wealth of opportunities, within and beyond the school day.


Key Stage 3

All pupils in Year 7 and 8 are taught a curriculum that builds skills and knowledge and meets the requirements of the National Curriculum They study Art, Computing, Drama, English, Geography, History, Mathematics, Modern Foreign Languages (French or Spanish), Physical Education, Religious Studies, Science and Technology (Food, Textiles, Resistant Materials and Graphics) . Support is provided for pupils with particular special education needs.

In Year 7, pupils are taught in mixed ability classes except in Mathematics where they are set by ability on entry.


In Year 9 pupils are able to make specialist choices within the creative subjects. The subjects are Art, Drama, Music and Technology.


Key Stage 4

A varied and challenging curriculum has been developed at key Stage 4. All pupils study English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Double Science, Religious Studies, Physical Education and ICT.


Pupils also choose options from a range of subjects, which include:

Art, Business & Economics, Computer Science, Digital Photography, Drama, Electronics, French, Food Technology, Geography, Graphics, Health & Social Care, History, Media Studies, Music, Resistant Materials, Sociology, Spanish, Textiles & Triple Science.


We have developed a range of alternative courses with local providers which complement the Key Stage 4 curriculum. All pupils in Year 10 undertake work experience of two weeks’ duration.


Pupils who are literate in a community language are encouraged to take a GCSE in that language.


Our Religious Education curriculum is based on Newham’s agreed syllabus, which has been ratified by Newham Council, local teachers and representatives of all major faiths and denominations. It ensures that our pupils gain an understanding of all world religions.
