Our learning

Department Vision and Priorities

Media Studies exists to develop skills in analysis, evaluation, research, planning and production. We believe that all learners should be able to work independently and in groups to gain insight into different texts (broadcast, print and e-media), explore the messages hidden within them and produce their own with an intended purpose. These are essential skills within the 21st Century in a country driven by the mass media.

  • Researching and analysing media texts from across the mass media
  • Exploring conventions of genres
  • Understanding the pressures and values represented within the mass media
  • Identifying specific target audiences and how they are affected by the mass media
  • Exploring the representation of people through gender, culture, ethnicity, age and all other aspects.



  • Researching, planning, producing and evaluating a horror film (30% coursework)
  • Case study into teenage role models and celebrities with production of print media (30% coursework)
  • Analysis of the Action Adventure film genre (25% exam)
  • Exploration of scheduling and audience pleasures linked to TV Comedy (15% exam)



Homework is set weekly and often include practical and research based tasks.
