THE BUSINESS STUDIES CURRIULUM
Business Studies is an option subject that is studied in Key Stage 4 only.
In Year 10 and Year 11 Pupils who have selected Business Studies as one of their option subjects undertake coursework leading to a BTEC First Certificate with the Edexcel examination board. Business Studies lessons last for five hours a week. The qualification is gained through coursework alone (ie: there are no exams). The work produced during lesson time is therefore especially important.
LINKS WITH INDUSTRY
As the subject suggests, links with industry are an important part of the course. The school has developed a number of links with local businesses, and candidates visit these to help them contextualise their learning. We are fortunate to be located within easy reach of a range of prestigious business organisations.
The Tate and Lyle Sugars factory in Silvertown, London City Airport, and West Ham United are among the organisations we work with. Pupils can expect to visit these as part of their course.
HOMEWORK
All pupils have homework every week in Business Studies. Pupils should note their homework in their Planner each lesson. Parents/carers who want to take an active role in supporting their child with Business Studies homework should visit the relevant section of our MLE (Fronter) for more detailed information. Your child has a user name and password to access this information.
REWARDS AND SANCTIONS IN BUSINESS STUDIES
We have high expectations in the Business Studies department. We do all we can to provide lessons in which pupils are suitably challenged and can achieve their potential. In return we expect pupils to try their best in lessons and homework.
Our expectations in Business Studies
We expect pupils to follow the school’s code of conduct. In particular, we expect pupils to:
· arrive on time to lessons
· be suitably equipped with a pen, pencil, planner and a USB stick
· listen respectfully when the teacher is talking
· listen respectfully when another pupil has been invited to speak
· not to disrupt the teaching or learning of other children
· to ask for help quietly if they do not fully understand the work
· put their best effort into homework and hand it in on time
· try their best
· treat the furniture, equipment and resources in the Business Studies rooms with respect
Rewards
In Business Studies we reward pupils for effort and achievement using a number of different methods, such as:
Positive referral: The teacher may award the pupil by making a positive entry on SIMS Behaviour Management, detailing the nature of work or behaviour that has merited the award.
Telephone call home: Where a pupil has shown effort or achievement that is well above what we would normally expect, we may call home to let parents/carers know.
Postcard in mail: Where a pupil has shown effort or achievement that is well above what we would normally expect, we may send a postcard home to let parents/carers know.
Sanctions
Where pupils do not meet our expectations, there are sanctions. Depending on the circumstances we may use one or more of a number of methods, such as:
Telephone call home: Where a pupil is not meeting expectations, we may call home to discuss this with a parent/carer and agree ways in which home can support school to improve the situation.
Postcard in mail: We may send home a postcard to notify parents/carers that their child is not meeting expectations, or when a pupil is not handing in homework.
Negative referral: The teacher will record the misdemeanour on SIMS Behaviour Management.
