English

We are an open, inclusive and reflective department. English ensures access and entitlement to every other area of the curriculum. We therefore try to foster the skills of effective written and spoken communication in a wide variety of contexts.

We have a well resourced department working closely with other departments and encourage, at every opportunity, skills of learning, both independently and collaboratively. We encourage pupils to make good use of the Learning Resource Base and the after school study support programme.

Our primary focus is literacy. All of our schemes of work promote language awareness and we work hard to make sure every pupil can access the curriculum. Catch up classes are available for those who need a boost in literacy skills. We have managed to build confidence in students who are below the chronological reading age.
All pupils follow two courses at GCSE: English Language and English Literature. Both the Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 courses encourage enjoyment of reading.

There is also an ongoing programme to ensure that high achieving pupils complete meaningful extension tasks for each unit of work for Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.

Our expectations for the pupils are high. We offer the highest level of support to our pupils. We are a hard working collegial team committed to whole school improvement and the raising of standards.
