“The History Department has exciting news. Cumberland School has been chosen by the Imperial War Museum as one of only four London schools, to take part in a project called New Perspectives to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the First World War. This project will take place in spring 2014 – during the start of the centenary commemoration of the First World War. Cumberland School pupils will be involved in the school-based project researching and creating a short animation film on ‘New Perspectives’ of World War One. They will be focusing on the War in Africa.

This is going to be a very exciting opportunity for our pupils to be involved in such a prestigious project, working alongside professionals from the Imperial War Museum.

More details will follow soon. Meanwhile, we need your help! We are asking pupils, parents and carers and staff to help us in starting to research the First World War in Africa. There are some materials available on this topic from a British and European point of view. However we would be grateful for assistance with obtaining some materials on African involvement in the war from an African viewpoint.

•Do you know someone who was involved in the First World War in Africa?
•Do you have any artefacts, diaries, journals or letters from somebody involved in the First World War in Africa?
If you think you could assist us with researching the First World War in Africa from an African perspective, please contact one of the History Teachers”.

Thirty year 10 pupils were invited to attend GCSE ‘Science Live’ show on Friday 23rd November. They were fortunate enough to be inspired by world’s leading scientist here in the UK, they got to meet:
Professor Jim Al-Khalili He is professor of physics at the University of Surrey and also has a chair in the Public Engagement of Science. He won a Faraday prize for science communication. He often appears on television and radio.
Dr Andrea Sella is a synthetic inorganic chemist. That's a fancy way of saying that he makes new compounds and materials which have interesting optical and magnetic properties. Andrea is based at University College London where he teaches chemistry and is an EPSRC Senior Media Fellow.
Professor Lord Robert Winston He is a medical doctor, distinguished scientist, particularly in the area of human fertility. He, like most of our contributors, has the gift of being able to communicate in a most engaging way. Not surprisingly he is also a well-known television presenter and in addition he is also a politician who sits on the Labour Party benches in the House of Lords.
Dr Kate Lancaster Nuclear fusion (rather than nuclear fission) may one day play a key role in solving our energy problems. It’s been a long time coming because of some very tough scientific problems.
Professor Dave Cliff has a BSc in Computer Science, and Masters and PhD degrees in Cognitive Science. He spent the first seven years of his career working as an academic, initially at University of Sussex UK and latterly as a professor in MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab, USA
The pupils enjoyed the show and were amazed about how much science opportunities there are in the worldwide.

On the 14th and 28th of June, Fran O’Boyle a Storyteller was commissioned by the Cumberland English Department to delivery storytelling sessions to all of Y8 English classes. Some of his stories were scary, some were oral legends from Ireland. 8D were privileged to hear the stories the ‘3 Worriers’ and ‘The Bone Keyboard’. Members of 8D were able to speak to Fran after our session and ask him questions about his storytelling life.

“My Granny had told me stories as a child, but later in life a storyteller called Taffy Thomas was a great influence, as well. They were the main reasons I became a storyteller.”, Fran explained.

Initially, nervous coming to a London school Fran found it s nice to be around kids that enjoyed his stories. And 8D sure did enjoy the stories, Leeza Hussain said “I liked it because it was interesting”, whilst Joe Powell said it was “a frightening experience!”

Jamie Cornuaud said “I thought it was a good opportunity to listen to the storyteller because it was good to listen to mythical stories from around the world”.

This day and the stories told will stay with the pupils for the rest of their time at Cumberland and hopefully beyond.

We would like to say a huge thank you to Fran for attending Cumberland and hopefully inspiring a next generation of storytellers!

Annie O’Connell a Newham resident came to Cumberland for her annual visit this week. She came with her Guide Dog Nessie to talk to Cumberland pupils about being blind and how her dog and all Guide Dogs allow their owners to be independent in their daily life.

Annie lives a very busy life as Magistrate and participating in her many hobbies of dancing and visiting art museums, always with Nessie in tow! She also explained the good work of the Guide Dog charity who trains the dogs from puppies to be able to assist their owners in the safest way. As a charity they provide free of charge the dogs for the blind, but rely solely on donations to continue their good work.

For more information, please visit http://www.guidedogs.org.uk/?gclid=CNjcxYqskbECFRMgtAodRDqBmA

Annie and Nessie were once stuck at a side road in Newham. A Cumberland pupil who met them at their last visit saw that they were struggling to cross the road and immediately offered help! We all agree that this is the whole reason of why she continues to come to our school: to build a stronger sense of community for all!
